Maxims of Mary Ward

MARY WARD (1585- 1645)

  • Divine love is like fire, which will not let itself be shut up, for it is impossible to love God and not to labour to extend his honour...

  • Perform all your employments orderly and diligently and be not content to appear good in the eyes of men/ women only, but strive also to be so in God’s eyes.

  • We ought to seek, God alone in our works and therefore to fulfil all as faithfully and carefully no one sees us, as if we had the whole world as spectators...

  • If anyone gives you trouble, meet him / her with friendly words, for so you soften both yourself and him / her...

  • If we see a fault in our neighbor, we should certainly dislike the fault, but not the person...

  • Love and speak the truth at all times....

  • He who trusts too much to himself will often fail, for God sometimes lets the proud fall that they may learn what they are....
